Canada's Inflation Is 3.0%. Gasoline Is Doing Much of the Work, and the Bank of Canada Watches a Different Number.
The headline rate sits at the top of the Bank's target range. Without gasoline it is 2.4%, and the Bank's core measures are about 2%.
True
The claim
“Canada's annual inflation rate is 3.0%.”
Statistics Canada, Consumer Price Index for August 2026. September's figures had not been released when we wrote this.
Verdict: True
What we found
- The Consumer Price Index rose 3.0% over the year in August, matching July. Excluding gasoline it rose 2.4%, up from 2.2% in July [1].
- Gasoline was up 22.8% over the year in August, after 25.7% in July. Transportation was up 7.5%, food from stores 2.8%, and shelter 1.5%. Rent rose 2.8% [1].
- Prices fell 0.1% from July to August. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis they rose 0.2% [1].
- The Bank of Canada aims to keep inflation at “the 2 per cent midpoint of an inflation-control target range of 1 to 3 per cent” [2]. It also watches core measures meant to filter out temporary swings. In August CPI-trim was 1.9% and CPI-median 2.0% [2][3].
- The policy rate is 2.25%, last changed Oct. 29, 2025. The next decision is Oct. 28, 2026 [4].
The 3.0% figure is True. It is the official rate, at the top of the Bank's 1–3% range, not above it.
What they didn't tell you
- Take out gasoline and it is 2.4%. By our own subtraction (3.0 minus 2.4), about 0.6 points, or roughly a fifth of the headline rate, is gasoline-related [1]. This is a rough comparison, not Statistics Canada's own contribution estimate. Whether that persists depends on energy prices, which we do not forecast.
- The Bank looks at core measures. CPI-trim at 1.9% and CPI-median at 2.0% are close to the 2% target [2][3]. The headline 3.0% on its own does not show this.
- Shelter inflation is low. Shelter rose 1.5% over the year, though rent rose 2.8% [1]. These categories matter for different households.
- One month's reading. Prices fell 0.1% from July before seasonal adjustment and rose 0.2% after it [1]. The September figures will show whether the pattern holds.
What we still don't know
- What will September's inflation be, and what will the Bank of Canada do on Oct. 28? We make no forecast.
- How will energy prices move? Reporting says gasoline stayed high as the conflict in the Middle East continued [5]. We don't predict prices.
